The right door for your home?

One aspect of the restoration of a period home could be that you need to replace some doors. While traditional wooden doors are generally of solid construction and have been known to last centuries, in fact there is a door in-situ at Westminster Abbey that dates back to before the Norman invasion, it can be the case that the doors have been damaged by fire or damp, or that a previous owner has replaced the original doors with cheap hollow flush doors during the 1960s or 70s.

In either case, fitting doors suited to the style of the building can result in a marked increase in the value of your home. One other factor that may cause you to need new doors is fire regulations.

For period properties, the option of off-the-shelf doors is often not an option. While quality of the craftsmanship is usually evident in these older buildings, they often don't have standardised door sizes, and sometimes doors of an unusual shape. Something that it would be necessary to have a joiner build you a bespoke door.

Whether you are constrained by conservation requirements or personal taste to a traditional door, or if you want a more contemporary door, there are benefits to solid oak doors that go beyond the aesthetic. Fire rated oak doors can help fulfil the requirements of fire regulations, and solid oak makes an exceptional sound proof material.
