| Staircase problems may vary from creaking due to being worn or sometimes more serious structural damages. Major problems will need expert help. Treads and risers can be tightened by screws from above to prevent them from creaking. Where necessary, replace or re glue the blocks that hold the treads and risers together. Loose joints between the stairs and string should be glued and new wedges should be driven into the joint.
Traditionally oak and other fine hard woods were waxed or resin varnished or generally left bare. During the 18th century, softwood was widely used and was often painted. Sometimes however, it was stained or waxed to look like hardwood. A semi gloss finish is commonly preferred when repainting. For more durability, pure beeswax can be used. |
